Welcome to our holiday home in the Charente Maritime. This area of France is famous for its fields of sunflowers, sandy beaches and summer sunshine. Our traditional Charentaise farmhouse is situated in a tiny hamlet about a 15 minute drive from the market town of St Jean d'Angely and 45 minutes from La Rochelle. The spacious house provides comfortable self-catered accommodation, a large garden and a brand new outdoor swimming pool. Les Romains Charente is a 200 year old Charentaise farmhouse within easy reach of larger towns and villages. It is set in approximately half an acre of private garden surrounded by a secure wall and lockable wrought iron gates, thus is very safe for small children. Traffic through the hamlet is minimal and consists mostly of tractors! The house easily sleeps 10-12 guests and is ideal for 1 or 2 families. It has many original features; stonework, exposed oak beams and Charentaise fireplaces, together with some quirky new ones! The thick stone walls and tiled floors ensure the house is cool in the summer months but with electric heating and woodburners, it is ideal for cosy winter holidays too. The hamlet of Petit Malveau is surrounded by fields of sunflowers, vines, maize and many impressive vegetable plots. The country lanes around the local villages are very quiet and are ideal for family bike rides. The birdlife is exceptional, with daily sightings of birds of prey, herons and hoopoes. The neighbouring villages provide a boulangerie, a convenience store and a post office. A free tennis court is a short bike ride away. The village of Migre (also within cycling distance) has easy stocked trout fishing and a bar.
